The U16 team from the Elm Grove Soccer Club won its pool at the 2016 US Youth Soccer Region II Soccer Championships in Indianapolis before falling in the semifinal.
Elm Grove Soccer Club began pool play with a 3-0 win over FC Nebraska on June 24. After tying Kansas Rush Academy on June 25, Elm Grove Soccer Club came away with a 4-1 victory over Libertyville (Illinois) FC to win Group A with seven points.
Ohio Premier Soccer Green ended Elm Grove Soccer Club's run with a 1-0 win June 28 in the semifinals. OP Green then went on to win the region and advance to the national championships in Texas with a 1-0 victory over the Milwaukee Bavarians.
'If I would have said a month ago (to the team), 'Would you be happy with getting out of our group at regionals?' I am sure everyone would have said, 'Yes,'' coach Troy Dusosky said. 'Now if I were to ask (the team), 'Would you be happy with getting to the semifinals and not going all the way to Texas?' They would say, 'No way.'
'Our team believes that there is still work to do and we should still be playing and that we will play anyone any time and anywhere. We were one of the country's 16 best teams, but I believe we are No. 1 in this country.'
Elm Grove Soccer Club's Jesus Hernandez led the Region II tournament in goals with four.
