Facing three of the top five teams in the Greater Metro, the Brookfield East baseball team lost two of its final three conference games to finish in a sixth-place tie with Wauwatosa East.
Because of a tiebreaker, the Spartans were seeded seventh in the Greater Metro Conference tournament.
Last week, Brookfield East sandwiched a win over Franklin around losses to ranked teams Marquette and Menomonee Falls.
The Spartans entered their Greater Metro Conference tournament quarterfinal game against Marquette at 13-13 overall and 9-9 in conference.
Despite collecting 13 hits and rallying to tie the game in the seventh inning, East fell 5-4 to Marquette on June 27.
The Spartans scored single runs in the third and fourth to take a 3-1 lead on the Hilltoppers. Marquette tied the game with two runs in the fourth and grabbed a 4-3 lead with a run in the sixth.
Brookfield East tied the game in the top of the seventh, but Marquette won in the bottom of the frame on a walk-off single by Jeremy Schultz.
T.C. Swittel and Quinn Hyndiuk each went 4-for-4 for Brookfield East, while Jake Smith drove in a pair of runs.
Danny Butler started and went four innings for the Spartans, walking five and striking out four. Travis Styer pitched two innings of relief, and Avery Barnes tossed two-thirds of an inning and took the loss.
Brookfield East quickly recovered from its tough loss to Marquette by coming away with a 6-0 win over Franklin the following day.
Swittel threw a one-hitter against the Sabers, becoming the first pitcher to shut out Franklin this season. He also added two hits and a double at the plate.
The Spartans broke open a scoreless tie with four runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth. Barnes and Styer each chipped in two hits.
Brookfield East couldn't hold its early 2-0 lead in an 8-2 loss to Menomonee Falls on June 30.
The Spartans collected just two hits against Falls starter Logan Roble, who closed the game with six straight scoreless inning after falling behind 2-0 in the first.
Falls plated four runs in the third and four more in the fifth. Ty Weber went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs.
Jake Smith pitched a complete game with one walk and two strikeouts for Brookfield East. The Spartans committed four errors.
Wood Bat Tournament
Chris Shrawder limited Cudahy to two runs over seven innings July 2 to lead Brookfield East to a 5-2 victory in the championship game of the South Milwaukee Wood Bat tournament.
The Spartans qualified for the championship game by beating South Milwaukee and SWCHA on June 18.
Brookfield East fell behind, 1-0, before tying the game in the bottom of the first and taking a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the second. Cudahy pulled to within 3-2 in the third, but the Spartans added an insurance run in the fifth and another in the sixth.
Shrawder allowed seven hits and didn't walk a batter in a complete-game effort.
Cole Vento went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and an RBI.
Brookfield East was scheduled to open the Greater Metro tournament against Marquette on July 5. The Spartans will close the regular season with a nonconference game at Regner Park against West Bend West at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 9.
