Brookfield Academy won their WIAA regional championship on March 4-5, defeating Greendale Martin Luther on Friday and Milwaukee Career Technical on Saturday, both games at Patriot's Hall.
Next up is the WIAA sectional semifinals to be held at 7 p.m. Thursday March 10, at West Allis Central. The opponent will be Milwaukee Lutheran (17-8) of the North Shore Conference. The Red Knights are twice the size (enrollment) of Brookfield Academy, and they are coming off a great win over defending state champion Brown Deer.
Second half run
In front of a packed house at Patriot's Hall on Friday, the Blue Knights beat the Greendale Martin Luther Spartans, 73-60.
After leading at half by just two points, 31-29, the Blue Knights used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to take charge of the game.
BA was led by Goecks with 28 points, including four 3-pointers. Clarey added 17 points, junior Alex Setzer had 14 points and senior Joseph Lemon contributed 13 points.
Setzer had six blocks, along with Colten Bonk, who added two more blocks. Clarey added 11 assists and Lemon 11 rebounds.
Rally to win
On March 5, Brookfield Academy hosted the WIAA regional finals and defeated Milwaukee Career Technical, rallying to beat the Cougars, 59-54. After trailing most of the game Bonk gathered in an offensive rebound, went back up, scored and was fouled. Bonk sunk the free throw, giving BA a 44-43 lead, which they never relinquished. Clarey made two free throws in the final 54 seconds to secure the victory.
BA found themselves trailing, 28-24, at half but outscored Career Tech, 35-26, in the second half to win the WIAA regional championship. The Blue Knights were led in scoring by Clarey with 21 points, and Lemon added 17 points.
