After cruising past West Allis Central in its season opener, Brookfield East's girls soccer team was faced with the challenge of playing the defending Division 1 state runner-up in just the second game of the year.
The Spartans were up to the challenge, following up a 9-0 rout of West Allis Central March 28 with a 1-0 win over Madison West two days later to begin the season at 2-0.
East returns five All-Greater Metro players from last year's team that finished 9-6-4 overall and in third place in the conference at 4-2-1.
Senior forward Aubrey Prey, junior midfielder Delani MacKay, junior defenders Christine Brankle and Bailey Fitzpatrick and sophomore forward Olivia Banks all were honorable mention All-Greater Metro in 2016.
The Spartans will be tasked with replacing five All-Greater Metro players, as first team forward Abby Gregg and honorable mention picks midfielders Ari Banks and Cami Cross and defenders Every Ulschmid and Hanna Lein have graduated.
East scored six times in the first half against the Bulldogs, with Banks putting the Spartans up for good in the third minute. Rachel Surges and Banks each had two goals with Michelle Kugler, Prey, Allison Mihm and two own goals by the Bulldogs rounding out the scoring.
Prey, MacKay, Sarah Bachmann and Emma DeValkenaere each had assists in the victory.
Fitzpatrick scored in the 87th minute off a pass from Banks to lift Brookfield East past Madison West, which is ranked No. 5 in the Division 1 preseason coaches poll a year after losing 1-0 in the state championship game to DSHA.
Before heading into spring break, the Spartans were scheduled to play at Menomonee Falls on April 4 before hosting Waunakee on April 6.
