Eleni Tongas won both the 55-meter hurdles and the triple jump to lead the Brookfield East girls track and field team to a second-place finish at the Doug Johnson Invitational on March 24 at West Allis Central High School.
The Spartans scored 155.5 team points to finish as the runnerup at the 10-team meet, behind Brookfield Central at 162 points. West Allis Hale was third with 92 points, and defending state champion Milwaukee King took fourth with 64.5 points.
Tongas took the 55 hurdles title in 9.13 seconds and claimed the triple jump crown at 32 feet, 10.75 inches.
Also winning individual championships for Brookfield East were Meg Swietlik in the 400 in 1 minute, 8.27 seconds and Lizzy Cagle in the shot put with a top throw of 37 feet, 9.5 inches.
The Spartans won a pair of relays, with Gina Behling, Isabel Szablewski, Melissa Torbey and Hadley Mueller winning the 4x400 in 4:45.57 and Swietlik, Behling, Zoe Barany and Emily Breider placing first in the 4x800 in 10:53.35.
Taking second place for Brookfield East were Sophie Tasker in the 800 in 2:36.64; Szablewski in the 1,600 in 5:48.93; Annie Noel in the 3,200 in 13:40.34; and Rose Dundun in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet. The Spartans came in second in the 4x160 in 1:34.95 with the team of Natalie Rouse, Mueller, Sharey Partee and Rachael Behling and were the runnerup in the 4x240 with Nasiera Cloyd, Jennifer Austin, Abigail Werry and Emma Tabor finishing in 2:30.63.
Madison Hayden came in third in the 400 in 1:13.07, Olivia DeValkenaere was third in the shot put in 33-03 1/2, Bella Rosa took third in the long jump at 15 feet, 3.5 inches, Werry was fourth in the 200 in 30.30 seconds, Kayla La Fontain was fifth in the 800 in 2:53.54, and Austin came in fifth in the long jump in 14-03 1/2.
