Brookfield East boys basketball

Brookfield East's boys basketball team had little trouble with Waukesha South on Feb. 14, cruising to an 81-30 rout of the Blackshirts.

The Spartans dominated the first half to take a 49-8 advantage into halftime. Brookfield East made 32 field goals and went 11-for-12 from the free-throw line, while Waukesha South shot just 8-for-42 from the field.

Senior guard Jake Graf led the Spartans with 20 points. Junior forward Patrick Cartier scored 14 points, junior guard Sam Tallmadge had 9 points and freshman guard Michael Poker added 7 points.

Brookfield Central girls basketball

After having its seven-game winning streak snapped with a 38-37 loss to Franklin on Feb. 14, Brookfield Central's girls basketball team bounced back with a 59-39 win over Living Word Lutheran on Feb. 15.

The Lancers led 18-11 at halftime but Franklin came back in the second half and won the game on a free throw by Megan Lee with no time remaining.

Seniors Caroline Busch and Leah Swenson each scored 10 points to pace Brookfield Central. Freshman forward Anna Mortag and junior forward Kristin Gaulke added six points apiece.

Brookfield Central took control in the second half against Living Word Lutheran, turning a 26-22 halftime lead into a 20-point victory.

Mortag led the Lancers with 19 points, seven rebounds and seven steals. Busch finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, Swenson scored 14 points, senior guard Amanda Miller had seven rebounds and four assists and senior forward Claire Haynes pulled down seven rebounds.

Brookfield Central wrestling

Brookfield Central's wrestling team did not advance a wrestler through to the state individual tournament at the WIAA Division 1 sectional at West Allis Central on Feb. 18.

Sophomore Jacob Somlai (36-12) came up just short of a trip to state, falling by pin in 5 minutes, 56 seconds to Caleb Wright of Brookfield East in the 220-pound second-place wrestleback. He opened the sectional with a 10-6 win over Boyd Biggs of Waterford before being pinned by Aric Bohn of Mukwonago in 53 seconds in the semifinals. With Bohn going on to win the sectional title, Somlai earned a chance to wrestle for a state berth with a pin of Darius Adkins of West Allis Central in 4:44 in the third-place match.

Ben Vandenberg (120 pounds), Dayveon Martin (132), Alex Craig (145) and Matthew Aulgur (152) all dropped their first matches at sectionals.

Brookfield Glacier girls hockey

Brookfield Glacier girls hockey had its season come to an end with a 7-2 loss to Appleton United in a WIAA regional on Feb. 16.

Third-seeded Appleton scored nine seconds into the game and didn't look back, tallying six first-period goals to jump all over sixth-seeded Brookfield.

Ellen Hill and Hadley Malcolmson had goals for Brookfield, which finished its season at 8-15-0.
