Brookfield East has named former University of Wisconsin-Whitewater standout Steve Bartlein as its varsity baseball coach.
Bartlein replaces Nicholas Wycklendt, who resigned in December after three seasons as head coach of the Spartans to become the varsity baseball coach at New Berlin Eisenhower High School.
"The selection committee was impressed with not only coach Bartlein's baseball background but also his vision for the program when it comes to developing players of all skill levels and creating a championship atmosphere around baseball at Brookfield East," Brookfield East athletic director Ben Westphal said. "Coach Bartlein has a passion for the game, high baseball IQ and an excellent ability to build strong, positive relationships with student-athletes at Brookfield East."
Bartlein played for John Galewski at South Milwaukee High School before playing collegiately at UW-Whitewater from 2010-13. He helped the Warhawks to a trip to the Division III College World Series in 2011 earned first-team All-WIAC honors as a senior in 2013.
"I feel honored and fortunate to be selected as the next leader of the Spartan baseball program," Bartlein said. "I look forward to getting to know my new players and sharing my knowledge and passion for the game of baseball."
Bartlein has served as an assistant coach at Brookfield Central High School and is currently an instructor with the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Academy, an assistant coach at Carroll University and a special education teacher at Brookfield East.
