On Jan. 7, the Blue Knights fencing team traveled to Chicago University Lab High School in Hyde Park, Illinois, for the second round of dual meets. Unfortunately, the absence of several members of the starting lineup in both the boys and the girls teams led to some rather disappointing results. The upside is that a number of freshmen got a lot more floor time.

Nonetheless, the boys epee squad anchored their team to wins over Lowell and U. Lab and a close 13-14 loss to Marian Catholic. Bryan Kratoska went 10-1 on the day in sabre, and Yuran Liu recorded a 9-3 record in epee. On the girls side, Hope Schlosser, fencing as a one-person epee team, ended the day with an 8-3 record. Next week, we move on to the third round of dual meets at Maine West in Des Plaines.

Varsity wrestling

The St. John's/Brookfield Academy wrestling team competed in the Red Knight Wrestling Invitational at Milwaukee Lutheran High School on Jan. 7.  Of the Brookfield Academy wrestlers on varsity, Aidan Medora, wrestling in the 132-pound weight class, won his bracket with two pins and a win by decision in the championship match.  This week, the team will compete at Kenosha Christian Life on Thursday, Jan. 12.

“Operation Shredification” is in full swing for the ski team, as they hit the slopes for their first race on Jan. 5.  The Giant Slalom race was held at Sunburst Ski Area against Whitefish Bay and Wauwatosa on a chilly night.

The cold temps didn't keep the team from heating up, however.  Individually, Anna Deubel won the race for the girls varsity with Kate Gehl placing in second. For the boys varsity, Henry Von Hagke placed second overall, and Willie Tyson placed third. Marie Major dominated the girls JV. On a team level, the girls varsity won the race by 0.39 seconds. The boys varsity placed second overall.

Next week, the team heads to Holy Hill for a slalom race.
