After dropping its three games at the Joe Raymond Holiday Classic, the Brookfield Stars co-op boys hockey team bounced back to close a busy week with wins over DePere and Ashwaubenon to snap a six-game losing streak.
The Stars closed the 2016 portion of their schedule at 5-9-1 overall.
Brookfield opened the Joe Raymond Holiday Classic with a 6-3 loss to Escanaba (Michigan) on Dec. 26. The Stars jumped up 1-0, but Escanaba used four unanswered goals over the first period and the beginning of the second period to grab control.
Joey Schindler scored twice against Escanaba, while Zach Davis also found the back of the net. Grady Gibson had two assists, while Eric Sinson, Davis and Alex Fuchs also had assists.
The Stars led 2-1 after two periods against Northland Pines on Dec. 27 but gave up three straight goals to start the third in a 4-3 loss. Ethan Rentmeester, Sinson and Davis had goals for Brookfield, while Sinson, Schindler, Gibson, Davis and Robert Gruver had assists.
Ben Piette and Davis scored and Dylan Widmer had an assist in a 4-2 loss to Fond du Lac St. Mary's Springs on Dec. 28.
Brookfield snapped its six-game skid with a 4-2 win over DePere on Dec. 30. Trailing 1-0 after the first period, Gibson tallied a second-period goal to send the game to the third tied at 1-1. Sinson scored six minutes into the final period to give the Stars the lead, while Schindler added a late goal to make it 3-1 and another to ice it at 4-2.
Sinson also had two assists in the win over DePere. Schindler, Gibson, Davis, Piette and Gabe Lehnerer also had helpers, and Emmett Peters made 26 saves in goal.
The Stars made it a successful trip to the Green Bay area by wrapping their two-game northern swing with an 8-2 victory over Ashwaubenon on Dec. 31.
Sinson finished with two goals and four assists; Schindler had a goal and four assists; and Gibson scored twice. Michael Chavez, Lehnerer and Davis also scored, and Rentmeester, Parker Esswein, Davis, Widmer, Piette and Lehnerer had assists.
Peters saved 34 of 36 shots for his second win in as many days.
The Brookfield Glaciers co-op girls hockey team went 0-3 at the Culver's Cup held Dec. 28-30 at Hartmeyer Ice Arena and Madison Ice Arena in Madison to drop to 3-8-0 on the season.
Brookfield fell, 10-1, to Superior on Dec. 28 with Zoe Sternberg tallying its lone goal. The Glacers then lost 4-0 to Lakeland on Dec. 29 and 6-1 to Point-Rapids/Marshfield on Dec. 30.
Ellen Hill had Brookfield's goal against Point-Rapids/Marshfield with an assist from Lauren Ragon.
