Brookfield's co-op boys hockey team has come oh so close to wins over strong teams in three of their last four games but have two one-goal losses and a tie to show for it.
The Stars followed up a tie with WNS and a narrow loss to Marquette by nearly taking down state-ranked Homestead. Brookfield scored late in the third period to force overtime, but the Highlanders scored over four minutes into the extra session to pull out a 5-4 victory over Brookfield at The Ponds of Brookfield on Dec. 13.
Ben Piette tallied a shorthanded goal to give Brookfield a 1-0 lead just 5 minutes, 40 seconds into the game. Joey Schindler found the back of the net later in the first period to give the Stars a 2-0 advantage heading to the second.
Gavin Henry scored for Homestead to make it 2-1 with 11:03 left in the second period, but Zach Davis answered 19 seconds later to make it 3-1. The Highlanders got a power-play goal from Jackson Kratz with just 17 seconds to play in the period to pull to within 3-2.
Katz scored again just 1:09 into the third period to tie the game and Nathan Schimpf put Homestead up 4-3 with 6:33 left.
Eric Sinson pulled the Stars even and forced overtime with a goal with just 1:04 to play, but Katz completed his hat trick and won the game for Homestead at the 4:21 mark of the extra session.
Schindler, Sinson, Riley Cassada, Ethan Rentmeester, Davis (two) and Gabe Lehnerer had assists for Brookfield. Emmett Peters made 39 saves in goal.
The loss dropped the Stars to 3-5-1 overall. Brookfield's scheduled games at DePere on Dec. 16 and at Ashwaubenon on Dec. 17 were canceled due to last weekend's winter storm.
