For the Brookfield Barracudas boys swimming and diving team, it was a case of "same faces, different places."
Brookfield finished third with 174 points in the WIAA Boys Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 20 at the UW Natatorium in Madison, finishing behind Madison Memorial (314) and Madison West (202).
It brought a smile to the face of Brookfield coach William Twitchell.
"I am sure it is hard for someone outside the program to completely grasp the magnitude of our journey this year," Twitchell said. "We finished 11th in the state just a year ago, and with the same basic nucleus of athletes, we climbed into a top-three finish at state. Every swimmer moved up from their seeded positions.
"I would be hard pressed to say what swimmer had the greatest race of the day. In the end, I think the meet came down to what our three seniors - Tomer (Korabelnikov), Connor (Rumpit) and Ben Everson - were able to show in their races: character, grit and determination."
Rumpit had the only championship, winning the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 34.26 seconds. But he was also fourth in the 200 free (1:41.74) and a member of two relay teams.
He was on the third-place 200 medley (1:37.17) with Korabelnikov, junior Ben Attenberger and sophomore Ryan Linnihan and was a member of the sixth-place 400 free relay (3:12.83) with Linnihan, Korabelnikov and Attenberger.
Attenberger finished fourth in the 200 individual medley (1:54.34) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (58.20) and was a member of the sixth-place 400 free relay.
Linnihan scored in two individual events. He was sixth in the 100 free (47.41) and seventh in 50 free (21.77).
Korabelnikov was eighth in the 100 backstroke (53.55) and 13th in the 200 IM (1:58.80).
Sophomore Sam Kult finished 11th in the 200 IM (1:58.28) and 12th in the 100 breast (1:00.57).
Also competing, but not scoring, was the 200 free relay, which finished 21st (1:31.77) behind Kult, sophomore Emer Martinez, freshman Joe Decker and Everson.
