Waukesha County Board Chairman Paul Decker is recovering after suffering a heart attack on Thursday, July 6.

Decker, 65, of Hartland was released from Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital over the weekend. He posted on Facebook, "Thank you very much! Grateful for all the caring support, glad to be home!"

Doctors will be looking at test results to determine whether he needs surgery, he said.

Decker said that he had been feeling great the past few days, and the heart attack happened overnight.

He explained that doctors think his heart attack was due in part to heredity, and in part to damage to the heart from chemotherapy and radiation he underwent for treatment of lung cancer.

"I'm expecting a full recovery," Paul Decker said.

According to his wife, Paula, he is doing well but has to lie flat for awhile.

"For him (Paul), he is very active and verbal, so to be on his back is very frustrating. He has been talking to the nurses about the great state of Wisconsin and wonderful Waukesha County," Paula said.

She added that Paul was pleased with his golf score of 84 from the previous day and was disappointed at not being able to golf for a few days.

The Decker family is appreciative of the many calls of support from friends and colleagues,  and people from the Waukesha and Lake Country areas.

Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow said he spoke with Decker and said he seemed to be good spirits.

"We wish him the best and hope for a speedy recovery," Farrow said.
