Brookfield East violinist takes 2nd at competition

Tabby Rhee, 17, a senior violinist from Brookfield East High School, won second place at the Madison Symphony Orchestra's 2016 Bolz Young Artist Competition.

Rhee and other young artists individually performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra at Overture Hall in downtown Madison on Jan. 29. Both the first and second place finishers won a $2,000 scholarship and be featured as soloists with the Madison orchestra during the Spring Young People's Concert.

Balfany selected as

new Lannon principal

Brian Balfany has been selected as the new Lannon Elementary School principal. The Hamilton School Board will take official action April 5 on his appointment which he will begin July 1.

Balfany has been associate principal at Swanson Elementary School in the Elmbrook School District for the past three years. He began his professional career in 2007 as a middle school band teacher in Elmbrook, and in 2013 he received the Kohl Fellowship Award for excellence and innovation in teaching.

He earned his master's degree in educational administration from Marian University in 2014 and his bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2006.

In addition to being Lannon principal, Balfany will coordinate the districtwide Summer Opportunities program, for which planning is already underway. He will have opportunities to observe and play a role in this year's program before being responsible for coordination in 2017.
