Life Time a threat
to local fitness centers
I found it surprising that in the past three weeks four letters were printed in the Public Forum column urging the Brookfield Council to approve the application of Life Time Fitness to build a facility in the new development on Calhoun Road. The letters were remarkably similar.
Life Time, while a respected national organization, is headquartered in Minneapolis and would pose a significant competitor to all the locally owned fitness centers who have been great corporate citizens, paying taxes for decades. In particular, Life Time would closely duplicate the fitness programs to be offered at the large, locally owned Wisconsin Athletic Club now under construction in Brookfield off Barker Road, due to open this summer.
Editors note: Torcivia has served as chairman of the board of the Wisconsin Athletic Club.
