CITY OF BROOKFIELD - There will soon be a new and convenient way for parents who are looking to have their children learn water safety.
Goldfish Swim School has announced plans to open the company's first location in the state of Wisconsin this fall.
The approximately 9,000-square-foot school will be at 12565 W. Feerick St.
The school provides swimming lessons to children between the ages of 4 months and 12 years and prides itself on offering highly-trained instructors in a friendly, tropical-themed pool area.
Goldfish keeps its class sizes small with a maximum student to teacher ratio of 4 to 1. One-on-one lessons are also available.
"We believe every child learns at his or her own pace and that skill levels vary from student to student," co-owner Rosanna Casper said.
The school's instructors must complete 40 hours of training in which they shadow an existing instructor across 12 different shifts.
Classes range from having parents and babies get into the water together to a junior program to teach children to swim independently, and eventually more advanced classes where students learn specific strokes and techniques.
The pool at Goldfish is kept at a comfortable 90 degrees and the facility will also include family dressing areas with private changing rooms, a snack bar, a retail shop and an air-conditioned viewing area for parents.
"We definitely fall into the higher end for amenities, but we're priced competitively within the market. It's $84 per month for a group lesson," Casper said.
Goldfish also offers a swim team program.
Casper and her husband Kevin, a Milwaukee native, have three children of their own.
"I'm a parent. I know how important water safety is, especially here in Wisconsin over the summer with all the lakes and the beaches," Casper said. "Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental deaths in children under the age of 4. Safety is our No. 1 priority at Goldfish."
