Accused Brookfield shooter Hubert Smith died of natural causes, according to an autopsy conducted by the Waukesha County Medical Examiner's Office.
Smith died June 1 of a heart attack and suffered from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to a news release from the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department.
A final autopsy report has not yet been filed by the Waukesha County Medical Examiner's Office.
Smith, 78, was found unresponsive at approximately 9:30 p.m. May 31 at the Waukesha County Jail, and lifesaving measures were taken. He was transported to Waukesha Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
Smith was charged with three counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide in October 2015 after he allegedly opened fire with a handgun on three of his neighbors with whom he had gotten into multiple arguments, including that afternoon, according to a criminal complaint.
Waukesha County District Attorney Susan Opper said the case will be closed out and dismissed.
Smith was also facing charges of bail jumping, battery and disorderly conduct in a separate case stemming from a February 2016 incident during which he allegedly grabbed a hotel manager by the throat while staying at Extended Stay America, 325 N. Brookfield Road.
