WISCONSIN RAPIDS - Seventy-four dogs were removed from a hoarding situation Wednesday in Wood County after authorities got a tip about unsanitary living conditions and a lack of dog food.

The owner voluntarily gave up the dogs to the South Wood County Humane Society, which is requesting monetary donations as many of the dogs are expected to need medical care, according to a news release. The dogs are in fair to good condition, but many have inflamed and raw skin from long-term exposure to feces and urine.

Seventy-four dogs were removed from a hoarding situation Wednesday in Wood County.

“The well-being of these dogs is our top priority,” Bridget Chariton, the humane society’s executive director, said. “They’re receiving additional medical care and lots of love from our staff and volunteers.”

The dogs are Australian Shepherds, Poodles and Aussie Doodles ranging from 6 months to 12 years old. No one was arrested in connection with the investigation, according to Wood County Humane Officer Nanci Olson.

“This is an unfortunate case of an animal lover who became overwhelmed, had limited resources and simply had more animals than could be properly cared for,” Chariton said.

The South Wood County Humane Society will be closed Thursday, so any phone calls and visits won’t be possible until Friday.

Donations can be made online, by mail to 3621 64th St. N., in Wisconsin Rapids or dropped off at Bow Wow Meow Pet Boutique, with any donations marked with “#74dogs” in the memo line to make sure the money goes to support the dogs.
